What a Google Server Looks Like

Inside Google Google has unveiled what one of its servers looks like. Now remember they have about 500,000 servers overall. Even if those are virtualized, they still have to run on hardware. The most interesting thing: each server has its own on board battery backup. Way cool.s Servers

TwitterVision

twittervision
This is a cool site to help visualize Twitter activity. It's a 2D and 3D map of live tweets from around the Earth. Sometimes it's tough to show people who don't know Twitter a conceptual view of it. This is a great demo tool. Try the 3D mode, it's cool.

Additional Episodes of 'A Glimpse Ahead'

Banking

Retail

Health

Manufact
The now well known Microsoft montage called "A Glimpse Ahead" was actually created from several short episodes or mini-films showing the different types of technology they are looking to in the future.

The Twitter Global Mind

Rocketboom did a great explanation of the current state of Twitter. Why is it important? Why did Facebook try to buy it (and get rejected on a 500 million dollar bid)? How did Google's attempt at this work out? And finally, why will it change the world?

A Bright Future!

Video: Future Vision Montage Wow. This is an amazing vision of how computers could change our lives in the future. Everything in this video is very much in the realm of reality. UPDATE: I've seen the future and it is awesome. (Ok, I stole that quote)

NeoCube

NeoCube
NeoCube is a pretty amazing looking thing.  It's a group of powerful magnet ballbearings that can make shapes and designs.  It's a puzzle really, but it sort of is like "create your own matter".  Watch the video on their home page.  It's neato.

Credit Crisis Explained with Animation

This is a good explanation of what is happening to cause the credit crisis. Although I knew about the core reasons, I didn't realize the full complexity and severity of what has happened. But I also learned (a long time ago) that knowledge takes the teeth out of the beast so that we can all deal with it.  From http://crisisofcredit.com/ Update: Here is a link to Part 2

Collect Your Social Networks and Mail

nutshellmail.com
This was yet another cool site that I found on twitter.  Essentially, it's an aggregator that will let you collect information from multiple email accounts plus social network sites like Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn.  What it does is gather emails and statuses into a nice, tidy email that you can have sent multiple times per day.  You can even the delivery set hour by hour, day by day. With overflowing status and email notifications from so many social network sites, this makes alot of sense just so I can review it in one place, when I want to.   And it's FREE.

Good Web Design, Low Cost

SquareSpace.com
This is something advertised on Tekzilla the other day that really impressed me as a UI designer.  It's gotten so much less expensive and easy to build front end user experiences (as in design screens for web sites).  Since the web started there have been WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) software that has had varying degrees of usefulness versus cost.  Even though I develop with tools like Microsoft Visual Studio or Expression, I still had the habit of not using graphical designers to do this.  And I hadn't see a web based UI tool that I really would leave handcoding behind for, until now. It's a good time for a tool of this quality.  Companies are really turning away from hand coding, custom made user screens and towards packaged solutions.   This site makes total sense in today's economy and tech industry.

Online Charts -v- Visio

Lovely Charts
I came across this from someone on Twitter.  This has a fee of about $45 per year, but is free to make one diagram.  I found it much easier to use than Microsoft Visio or other fat client software.  This seems like a great idea because once your done with your diagram you don't have to email or post it somewhere.  The site allows you to share the URL directly. Yet another cool online application.  Give a whirl.
