Beautiful Supercomputer

Supercomputer in a Chapel
The eighth most powerful supercomputer in Europe was constructed in a very unique location:  inside of a historic chapel.  The IBM based system is called the MareNostrum, and it works on various high processing projects including the human genome, astrophysical simulation, weather forecasting, and geophysical modeling. And it's built in an exquisite location.

Twitter as Help Desk

Bank of America on Twitter

Aside from marketing, here’s another huge use for Twitter and social networking… help and support. Bank of America has done a very wise thing in providing an official Twitter account to support their customers.

I hope other information based services follow suit. It would be great to see companies like Dell, Amazon, or Microsoft offer support this way. The direct messaging feature in Twitter gives it a level of privacy.

Being able to connect (to me) is always the hardest part of tech support in large companies. Imagine if “please continue to hold, your business is important to us” turned into just leaving a tweet! Awesome.

New Kindle on Feb 9?

Amazon Kindle 2
The new Kindle from Amazon is expected on February 9th. Amazon has stated that the version 1 of this electronic book sold so well that they couldn't keep up with demand.  I want.

Video Umbrellas

Video Umbrella
I got to get me one of these. Although it could be a tad unsafe walking through Manhattan at rush hour watching YouTube.

Google Earth in a Browser

Google Earth in Browser
Just built my own Google Earth app inside a browser. Way cool! Very fast to do as well. Alas I only have it working in Firefox so far. Get the plugin for Google Earth from here.

I see the light of jQuery

jQuery is a UI dream!
Many mainstream websites are now using JQUERY for developing simplified, cross-browser scripting functions in web browsers. JQUERY is an open source project that essentially takes many of the most common JavaScript functions people build and standardizes them for use in very short commands. Microsoft has decided to embrace it, but not “make their own version of it or anything icky like that”.

Twitter Software

Get Twirl or TweetDeck
These kids today with their rock and roll music... Internets... and Twittering, er Tweeting... whatever! But lately, some marketing folks I know are tweeting alot. Hmm, maybe there's something to this. The best way to get into it I found, is to use one of the free clients like Twirl or TweetDeck.

It's Alive!

Robot Chicken
Robot Chicken is alive! I love this show. It's only 15 minutes long with short sketches, but they are BITING. It's on the AdultSwim. Here are some YouTube clips for your enjoyment (before they get pulled).

Woopra

Woompra!
I just like saying the name.  Woopra!  Interesting looking competitor to Google Analytics.  Woopra lets you see rolled up statistics in REAL TIME.  That could be very helpful in certain business situations (especially load balancing).  I haven't tried it yet, but I think I'm going to.  Check it out for yourself.

220 MPG? When?

Hybrid Technologies
Things like this give me hope that I won't be spending $70 a fillup forever.  I wonder about the timing of these kinds of announcements though.  So not alot of money was put into research to make 200+ MPG cars until gas was unaffordable? Gas companies would not profit from such a thing, so maybe their lobbying power stopped any tax breaks and such all over the world.  S'cuse me while I go watch Syrianna again.
