Google
announced they are planning to release an open source operating system. It was interesting for me, being a huge fan of Google, yet working in Microsoft technology. Blogs all over the net seemed to jump on the "is this the Windows killer" band wagon very quickly.
I think it's important to note that Microsoft has more up it's sleeve than Windows 7. Volta comes to mind (or a variant thereof), Windows Live (whatever it becomes), and the potential for a free ad-based Windows. If Microsoft really comes through on a stable way of making lightweight .NET apps, a light weight OS is the next logical result. Microsoft is already talking about thumb drive based profiles, cloud integration, and lightweight Silverlight apps.
Whether Google can topple their dominance in the corporate world will depend more on business than technology. I've tried to sell Google's search appliance in two companies I've worked in, but failed both times because of security concerns and the lack of Google "smoothing" anything out during pre-sale stage. They have a long way to go to push MS out of that leading role in corporations. In my view, they have barely nicked Microsoft Office dominance with Google Docs, and Microsoft Office Live is quickly catching up. And note, I am a frequent Google Docs user, but can't give up Office yet.
So to me, it is not cut and dry--read about what is quietly doing in the background. They're both moving quickly toward lighter footprint, lower cost operating systems and applications. Just labeling Microsoft as "fat client apps" is a mistaken belief.
