Google's Operating System

Google announced they are planning to release an open source operating system. It was interesting for me, being a huge fan of Google, yet working in Microsoft technology. Blogs all over the net seemed to jump on the "is this the Windows killer" band wagon very quickly. I think it's important to note that Microsoft has more up it's sleeve than Windows 7. Volta comes to mind (or a variant thereof), Windows Live (whatever it becomes), and the potential for a free ad-based Windows. If Microsoft really comes through on a stable way of making lightweight .NET apps, a light weight OS is the next logical result. Microsoft is already talking about thumb drive based profiles, cloud integration, and lightweight Silverlight apps. Whether Google can topple their dominance in the corporate world will depend more on business than technology. I've tried to sell Google's search appliance in two companies I've worked in, but failed both times because of security concerns and the lack of Google "smoothing" anything out during pre-sale stage. They have a long way to go to push MS out of that leading role in corporations. In my view, they have barely nicked Microsoft Office dominance with Google Docs, and Microsoft Office Live is quickly catching up. And note, I am a frequent Google Docs user, but can't give up Office yet. So to me, it is not cut and dry--read about what is quietly doing in the background. They're both moving quickly toward lighter footprint, lower cost operating systems and applications. Just labeling Microsoft as "fat client apps" is a mistaken belief.

The Future of Urban Mobility?

Air Pod
Motor Development International (MDI) is experimenting with these electric / air powered urban carrier.  An interesting concept for compactness, fuel efficiency, and being green. Two people in front face forward, while the back seats face backwards.  Interesting.  Maybe we'll see it in cities around the world soon.

Adobe Spreadsheet Application

Adobe Tables
Adobe continues on the path of highly usable, rich applications that work via lightweight web programming.  The latest from Adobe Labs is called Adobe Tables.  It is their version of a spreadsheet application. It is very interesting to watch this quietly going on the background.  Microsoft has been doing the same with Silverlight and Office Live as well. Whoever gets the marketshare, it's great to see more lightweight applications that potentially could run straight off a cloud.

Wii Bowling Ball

Wii Bowling
CTA Digital is coming out with a bowling ball for the Wii. Cool. Well, then again, does anyone think this could go terribly wrong at a Wii party with lots of drinks? Someone needs to create a protection shield for LCD TV's next.

500 GB Compact Disc ?

G.E. Breakthrough
G.E. has announced a breakthrough in storage on a compact disc.  500 GB on a disc may soon be possible.  The holographic technology is based on the same core principle as current CD/DVD's.  This means a player could potentially play 5, 50, or 500 GB discs.  I'm sure it is quite a few years away, but imagine what you could do.

Personal Submarine

Super Falcon Submersible
Well not just yet.  But a British inventor named Graham Hawkes built one and is going to offer training lessons in piloting it.  It "flies" through the water and can go down to about 1500 feet.  I want.

Tech that helps you sleep

Zeo Personal Sleep Coach
Some of the leading researchers in sleep have developed technology that is supposed to help you sleep better by monitoring brain waves. Track your REM, light and dark sleep periods to determine better habits for sleeping. This isn't some gadget somebody just made up, it's the result of some real science on the subject. It's a little pricey right now, but if it works I could see many people having one.

Phones That Fold Up

Folding Phone OLED
Kyocera is developing a phone that uses a flexible OLED display to allow the phone to be folded up. This allows for a much larger screen. OLED is much brighter and uses less power than current phone displays. On top of this, they are using kinetic power (charging by movement) so that it can be charged by walking around with it. Pretty cool.
