Office Wall Computing

Microsoft Office Wall
Microsoft recently demoed some of its next generation wall computing being pioneered by their research division. While it seems futuristic, I definitely can see a big future for gesture based user interfaces like this. Just think of the applications in different fields such as manufacturing, medical, and entertainment. My belief is that the more interactive and human friendly these systems become, the easier it will be for all of us to use computers.

HDR Photos in Flicker

HDR Photo
I was talking to a Photoshop and photography expert today about how amazing HDR images are. HDR stands for "high dynamic range", which Wikipedia defines as "a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminances between light and dark areas of a scene than normal digital imaging techniques or photographic prints". They have amazing depth and color. If you haven't seen an HDR photo, click the image to see 1.4 million of them on Flickr. The image above is attributed to flickr.com/zhzheka.

Record Your Life?

SenseCam

Did you ever see that movie The Final Cut with Robin Williams?  It has a movie technology of being able to record your entire life and replay it at any point.

Well, imagine if Microsoft were working on a camera that you wear, which takes pictures at certain times (like when temperature or light changes) and send the image to a cloud server.  Imagine it tagged everything and everybody in the pictures to make it searchable.

Well, Microsoft Research really is working on such a thing.  I'm not sure if that would be cool or not.  Sometimes I like remembering something I had forgotten (like an old friend for example).  Sometimes this could just be spooky.  It is only research, not a planned product.

Solar Power with More Power

SunCatcher

Sterling Energy Systems has produced a solar power dish system which consists of a unique radial solar concentrator dish structure that supports an array of curved glass mirror facets, designed to automatically track the sun, collect and focus, that is, concentrate, its solar energy onto a patented Power Conversion Unit. It is a 25 kilowatt electrical system.

NASA's New Rockets

ARES Rocket
NASA's replacement to the shuttle program passed a milestone this week. This week, the Ares I-X, a test rocket for the boosters to launch the Orion spacecraft back to the moon, passed a successful test fire. I decided to look for some pictures and found this great site with a tons of cool pictures of the hardware. Check it out if you're a space geek like me.

Fast Robotic Hands

Fast Precise Robots
These robots really could one day provide bionic arms.  If you watch in slow motion, it is nothing short of amazing how precise and delicate they are.

Twitter Software
I found this great little chart on TechCrunch that lets you do a quick comparison of different Twitter programs to use (instead of just their website).

Truly Usable TV-PC Integration

ASUS Keyboard PC
There have been several solutions for "using the Internet from my TV". I have one built into my HDTV. It's not very good (very slow and limited). I can use a laptop to connect my TV to Hulu, but then I can't use my laptop and have to turn off the screensaver, and have a cable across the living room. This ASUS keyboard seems like it will do the trick (in usability terms). It'll beam the video straight to the TV via wireless... it's got a small form factor for easy use on the couch... and has a touch screen on it. If it's not the end all be all, I still definitely like the trend.
